‘Mess With a Deer, Get the Antlers’: Tourist Gets Rammed in Viral Video

A video circulating online shows two deer ramming an unfortunate tourist. Educated guesses suggest this event took place at Nara Park, a public park in Japan at the foot of Mount Wakakusa. A tourism website for Nara Park says the area is famous for its “tame deer,” but this particular visitor might be inclined to disagree with the “tame” part.

In fact, the sika deer that live in Nara are wild animals, but they’re accustomed to human interaction. There are even “deer cracker” stations where visitors can buy food for the animals, and many people do. It’s not clear why one of the deer decides to ram into the back of the person in the video (maybe it’s angry the person didn’t buy deer crackers?), but it does, and then a second deer comes in for a surprise second ram.

The Instagram account @touronsofnationalparks shared the video, which has since gone viral, with the hashtag #MessWithTheDeerGetTheAntlers. However, we can’t say for sure that this person did anything wrong. It seems a lot of people were hanging around in close proximity to the deer, and if this is Nara Park, then that’s not breaking any rules.
