WATCH: Coyote and Bobcat Battle in a Tree

A hiker got more views than he bargained for when he spotted a coyote climbing a tree in pursuit of a bobcat one morning at a regional park in San Diego, California. Not your typical dog vs. cat scenario, this battle in the treetops took the hiker, Bryce Pierce, completely by surprise.

Pierce told local NBC San Diego News that he heard a loud rustling sound, then he saw a bobcat with coyotes hot on its tail. The bobcat scaled a tree, and one of the coyotes followed after. Pierce got his camera rolling, realizing he was witnessing something unique.

Pierce told NBC San Diego that he believes his dogs ultimately distracted the coyote. Indeed, the coyote does seem to look straight at Pierce’s camera before retreating back down the tree.
