The First Electric Ram Pickup Truck May Be the Cure for Range Anxiety

Dodge may have been a little late with the announcement of its first electric pickup, but for fans of Ram trucks, the new 1500 REV looks like it was worth the wait. Last week, the automaker officially took the wraps off the EV, which promises to deliver incredible range and game-changing cargo and towing capacity.

The Ram 1500 REV will be available in two versions—a standard model and a long-range edition. The standard version will come with a 168-kilowatt-hour battery capable of traveling up to 350 miles on a single charge. Meanwhile, the long-range REV will utilize a 229-kilowatt-hour battery pack giving it a class-leading range of 500 miles.

The electric Ram gives owners a variety of options when it comes to replenishing its batteries. The EV’s smart charging port is compatible with Level I, II, and III chargers and has fast-charging capabilities when available. That allows the truck to add 110 miles of range in less than ten minutes when plugged into a suitably equipped power station. And like the Ford Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV, the truck can be used as a generator for your home when the electricity is out.

Both versions of the truck have electric motors that produce 654 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque. That is enough to give them a maximum payload of 2,700 pounds and a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. Those numbers should make the REV 1500 an excellent option for pulling a travel trailer or a fifth-wheel, although how towing will impact range remains to be seen. The EV can also reportedly go from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The truck’s other intriguing features include 120V AC wall outlets to run power tools, appliances, and other electronic gadgets and a large 15 cubic-foot frunk (front trunk) that provides secure storage. The interior includes a 14.5-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional 10.25-inch passenger touchscreen for accessing the infotainment system. Other upgrades include 24-way power memory seats with a massage function and a 23-speaker premium Klipsch audio system with a 12-inch subwoofer and 24-channel amp with 1,228 watts of power.

While all of this sound very promising, customers will have to be patient a little longer. The Ram 1500 REV won’t be available until the fourth quarter of 2024. Pricing has yet to be announced, although Dodge is taking reservations with a refundable $100 deposit.
