Meet Emma—the Tiny Camping Trailer with Some Big Ideas

When Germany-based Kuckoo Camper introduced its Bruno travel trailer a few years back, it wowed the European market with its off-road, rugged design. Now, the company has revealed a prototype of its second towable, a smaller, lighter camper named Emma. And just like her big brother, she’s already capturing the hearts of RVers.

At first glance, Emma looks like a variation of the classic teardrop trailer we’ve seen many times in the past. But look a little closer, and some of the RV’s defining features begin to emerge. For instance, this model comes standard with a glass door on the curbside, with the option to add another on the other side. It also comes with expansive windows and a skylight, all of which let plenty of natural light into the interior. The result is a camper that feels larger and airier than it actually is.

Emma’s measurements are svelte, to say the least. The trailer is 11.5 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and 5.25 feet tall. It weighs in at just 882 pounds, which should make towing behind a family sedan or an EV a viable option. The camper’s interior space measures 8.2′ x 4.8′ x 3.8’—plenty of room to sleep two comfortably.

Unlike its sibling, this teardrop rides on tires better suited for highways and roads rather than trails. But the diminutive camper is built for adventure, offering a removable rear hatch for storage and a cleverly designed slide-out kitchen that is accessible inside or out. That set-up includes a meal-prep station, a portable single-burner stove, and storage for pots, pans, and dishes.

Inside, Emma features a queen-size bed that folds into a couch for lounging at the campsite. The cabin includes a surprising amount of storage, with wooden cabinets, shelves, and cubbies throughout. An electrical power system will be an optional add-on feature, presumably with solar panels mounted on the roof, but Kuckoo was light on the specifics for now.

When Kuckoo revealed the Emma at the CMT RV show in Stuttgart last month, the company was quick to point out that the camper is just a prototype for now. The trailer is expected to go into production in 2024, with preorders opening early next year. In the meantime, Kuckoo’s engineers are finalizing Emma’s design and pricing. Expect more information on this intriguing towable in the weeks ahead.
