National Park Service Announces Fee-Free Days for 2023
In what has become an annual tradition, the National Park Service has announced its fee-free days for the year ahead. On those dates, visitors to any of America’s national parks will be able to enter for free, regardless of how much it costs on any other day of the year.
For 2023, the Park Service will waive the price of the entry fee on five occasions. Those days include the following:
- January 16 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- April 22 – The first day of National Park Week
- August 4 – Great American Outdoors Day
- September 23 – National Public Lands Day
- November 11 – Veterans Day
Fee-free days were originally introduced as a way to increase accessibility to the national parks. But most locations that fall under NPS jurisdiction are free to enter any day of the year. Roughly 100 of the 400+ national parks have an entry fee, which ranges in price from $5 to $35. That money typically goes directly into the park’s budget and is used to pay for infrastructure needs, visitor education programs, habitat restoration projects, and other services.

“National parks are really amazing places, and we want everyone to experience them,” National Park Service Director Chuck Sams says via a press release. “The entrance fee-free days encourage people to discover the beauty, history and inspiration awaiting them in more than 400 national parks throughout the country.”
If you’re planning to visit a national park in 2023, perhaps your travel plans will line up with one of the above dates.
