Pulling into a Mermaid’s Cove | I Heart RVing

WE REALLY DON’T KNOW the exact number of miles you have to travel before manatees start looking like mermaids (if you know, please tell), but it can be a long RV drive to Miami (so we’re curious). In all seriousness, being able to encounter one of these gentle, friendly, and comically large (and whiskered) creatures is one of the childlike delights that await snowbirds in South Florida. Whether you encounter them at the surface or under the sea, don’t be surprised that these sea cows look more like Uga than Ariel.

WHY GO

Nature is at its very best when it feels personal. And few wildlife experiences are as personal—and magical—as meeting a manatee. Just don’t fall in love. (King Triton says that is strictly forbidden.)

WHERE TO GO

Crystal River is one of the rare places in the world where you can have an in-water experience with manatees. Tours with River Ventures are easy to book, and the Crystal Isles RV Resort is just 20 minutes away.

WHEN TO GO

November to April

I Heart ♥ Tip

Resist the temptation to touch! (Or kiss, you shameless romantic.) Manatees are naturally friendly and curious, but they’re also protected by federal law. So mind your best manatee manners.
