The Repair Event Cycle Time (RECT) initiative is not only moving forward and continuing to gain broad acceptance, officials said, but it’s about to gain even more prominent visibility across the RV industry.

In a presentation at the RV Dealers Convention/Expo, Garry Enyart, the former Cummins exec who’s spearheading the RECT initiative, provided a status update on the industry-wide effort tasked with reducing how long it takes for RVs to get serviced and back on the road.

“We’re beginning to launch projects to meet the critical needs that need to take place relative to some of the areas of improvement,” Enyart told RVBusiness, noting that people will also notice better communications, too.

“We’re going to do that through launching a quarterly newsletter,” he said. “We’re excited about it. It’s got a number of different topics that’ll be covered, feature articles, with extended links to additional information where needed.”

Among the ongoing RECT projects is a parts consolidation effort, which looks to pare down the multiple part numbers out in the industry for the same part. “We’ve got broad acceptance from the industry leaders to back fixing that,” Enyart noted, adding that RECT is also trying to standardize the multiple names of the parts used by both suppliers and OEMs. “This will help to ensure that when dealers and customers look up parts in the future that they’re easier to find,” he said.

“Another thing we’re going to be working on is helping to improve the warranty process,” Enyart continued. “Remove barriers relative to preapproval limits, and stuff like that. Now that’s something that some of the OEMs are working on already, and others have agreed to look into those things. So, that will be helpful to move barriers to getting units in and out, get them processed and repaired more quickly.”

Other aspects of the RECT initiative is the development of a best practices list, which will be shared across the industry in the hopes all stakeholders will implement them, as well as regional meetings for trouble-shooting and collaboration.

A key component to the initiative is the RECT data currently being compiled by the industry’s major Dealer Management Software (DMS) providers including IDS, Motility and Lightspeed. That information will be a major talking point at regional meetings starting next year, Enyart said.

“We’re going to get together, collaborate with the DMS suppliers who are working on the reporting piece, and make sure that everybody’s on the same page. We’ll share ideas on how we can improve as an industry,” he said.

Enyart promised additional projects in the future, but the current efforts are “enough to keep us busy for now.”

Suffice to say, the RECT initiative is not going away. In fact, while Enyart was quick to agree the progress made in the last several years has been significant, he couldn’t help but look ahead.

“We now have common ground and projects to work on and work towards, and things that will help us keep and keep customers for life. So, yes, there’s been a lot of work done, but there’s still more work to do,” he said.
