Last week Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, wreaking havoc across the state. Once it made landfall it weakened to a tropical storm before making its way back into the Atlantic Ocean, according to a information provided by the Carolinas Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (CARVC.)

As the storm approached South Carolina, it strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, making landfall on Friday (Sept. 30.) Campgrounds on the coast suffered damage mostly because of the storm surge. There was no mandatory evacuation in place and the campgrounds had guests staying with them. Coastal parks also sustained damage due to flooding rain and winds.

Dee Witting, Executive Director of (CARVC) said, “Most of our campgrounds have reopened following cleanup efforts. Myrtle Beach Travel Park is expected to reopen on Oct. 6 for guests.”

She added, “Apache Family Campground & Pier, Myrtle Beach Travel Park, Lakewood Camping Resort, Ocean Lakes Family Campground and Pirateland Family Campground all sustained flooding as they are directly on the coast beachfront. Their teams have done a fantastic job at cleaning up, prepping and servicing the campgrounds so that they could begin accepting camping guests again.”

Witting has reached out and spoken with each one of the campgrounds. She said, “Unfortunately some of them have damages that will take a little bit of time before they are fixed. Guests should check the campgrounds social media or website pages before arriving to find out what their status is. Some have particular areas that are closed.”

CARVC is a non-profit organization representing campgrounds throughout North and South Carolina. For more information visit campingcarolinas.com.
