Extremely Low Tide at Myrtle Beach Reveals Rare Fossils That Date From 80,000 to 100,000 Years Ago

A particularly low tide at Myrtle Beach yesterday revealed fossils of rocks and shells that date back to our planet’s most recent ice age. This fossilized beach was found off of 2nd Avenue Pier in Horry County, South Carolina.

In an interview with ABC News, Executive Director of the Borough of Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University, Paul Gayes said that the fossils are between 80,000 and 100,000 years old.

According to Gayes, “The modern beach is surprisingly thin,” and much of the sand sits on top of older deposits of sediment and minerals. If you were to explore the ocean in the surf zone, many of these deposits would be visible.
